Bud Van Berg Memorial 4-H/FFA

Junior Livestock Sale

Just like the Fair Book says the Junior Livestock Sale is sponsored by the Logan County 4-H Foundation and the Logan County FFA Alumni Association.  The purpose of this sale is to provide a market for livestock that has been raised and fed by Logan County 4-H and FFA members.  End of story right?  Wrong.

It is my opinion that as the individual species shows draw spectator crowds so should the Junior Livestock Sale.  The sale is so much more than just “a sale”.  This special activity culminates the year of hard work that these kids have put in raising, feeding and managing their livestock.  For these 4-H and FFA members this is a business that they have nurtured for several years.  The students that are seniors in high school have been planning, working and managing their livestock operation for 10 years.

Logan County Fair and the Bud Van Berg Memorial 4-H/FFA sale are looked on with envy from other fairs.  The 4-H and FFA members have the opportunity to sell two animals no matter how they place in their respective shows.  That in itself is pretty amazing but an even more amazing thing is that the citizens of Logan County support that with more than just words they come with monetary support also.  Our supportive community of businesses and individuals come together cooperatively to purchase animals that they might not other wise be able to afford individually.

After each animal sells you will see a hustle of activity making sure sale tickets are taken care of correctly and the next animal comes in the ring so buyers don’t have to wait long.  The activity that I find most special is that 4-H or FFA member that just sold his animal makes sure the animal is taken care of and then he/she goes back to the buyers and shakes hands and thanks the buyer.

Some people might wonder what happens to the money that these young people receive for their livestock.  It has been my experience that 4-H and FFA members take the money and re-invest it back into their perspective projects and save the remainder. When members are finished with the showing of their livestock they will take their money that they have saved and use it towards their upcoming college expenses.  That to me is pretty impressive to see that there is youth that are preparing for their future.  In fact if the truth were known some of the buyers in the crowd that represent businesses in Logan County came through this same sale with their own animals and want to make sure this Fair and its Junior Livestock Sale stay intact so it continues to benefit 4-H and FFA members for years to come.

It is my hope that I will get to see you and perhaps visit a while at the 2009 Bud Van Berg Memorial Junior Livestock Sale.
